The heroine in this gripping novel is a thirteen year old slave named Isabel. Isabel tells the story of her life as a slave. She was sold with her sister to a cruel Loyalist family even though the girls were to be free on the death of their former owner. When she is asked to spy for the Rebel cause, she delivers news of a plot to kill George Washington. The Rebels do not offer Isabel her freedom, and she realizes that, between the two sides in this war, neither are really on the side of the slaves. This story offers a look at slavery in New York as well as the forces at play during the American Revolution.
