Staff Review:

Goliath is the third book in the excellent Leviathan series, an imaginative steampunk alternate history of World War One in which warring nations are far more technologically advanced than in our world - they have masterful electronics and mechanical scientists and engineers, called Clankers, and incredible genetic engineering of fanciful beasts of all kinds, headed up by Darwininsts. In this world we meet a young woman, Deryn, disguised as a naval midshipman so she can serve in the Royal Navy aboard one of the great British living airships created by the Darwinists. Young Alek, secret heir to the Austrian throne, who comes from the Clanker world, finds himself on the run from those who started the war through the assassination of his parents. In this third novel, their adventures take them from Siberia across the Arctic Circle to the west coast of the United States, down into a Mexico rife with civil unrest, and finally to a climatic battle in New York.
